We just wrapped up a 2-night stay (Sunday–Monday) at Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, NC with my 9-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son, and as a first-timer, I wanted to share an honest rundown for other families who might be considering a visit — especially for winter break.
The Basics
Booked using a Groupon, which helped a lot on the room cost
2 nights, but in hindsight, 1 night would have been plenty
Smooth check-in, friendly front desk, and a really nice, comfortable room
The biggest win? It felt restful — we weren’t rushing anywhere and truly had the whole day to do what we wanted
One of my favorite parts was how present I felt with the kids. It was a bit of a mental reset for me, and I felt comfortable giving them some freedom — especially in the water park — which they loved.
They even got to see Santa, which felt like a sweet, unexpected bonus.
💦 Water Park Experience
The water park was the main event, and the kids loved it.
Highlights:
Tons of time in the wave pool
They especially loved hanging on the wall in the wave pool (though this came with a downside — more on that below)
Things to know:
Towels ARE provided — but it wasn’t immediately obvious where or how to get them when we first entered (immediately to your left in the shop when you walk into the park. Make sure you give your room number to check out towels and also when you return them so you don’t get charged)
Seating near the wave pool is competitive — if you want a lounge chair, get there right when it opens
You get full access to the water park on both check-in AND check-out days, which is more than enough time when your kids mostly want to be swimming
Because of that, next time we’d likely do just one night instead of two.
🧙 MagiQuest + PAW Pass
The kids were really into MagiQuest, though we did experience some frustration when the game glitched or didn’t give clear instructions on what to do next. When it worked, they loved it — but be prepared for a little trial and error.
We purchased the PAW Pass for each child ($80 per kid), which included:
One MagiQuest game for the entire stay
One MagiQuest Vellara wand, mod, or belt
Three Northern Lights arcade games
(excludes VR/headset games)
One candy cup from Great Wolf Candy Co.
One kids ice cream from Bear Paw
One pair of select swim goggles
One pass-exclusive personalized leather bracelet
Overall, the biggest value in the PAW Pass was the wand + MagiQuest access. The extras were fun, but the arcade portion was limited, and I wouldn’t buy it just for that.
🍔 Food & Drink: My Biggest Caution
This was the biggest downside of the trip.
We spent over $200 on food and drinks at the resort
Food was honestly mediocre for the cost (pizza was the exception — that was decent)
You’re paying for convenience, but it adds up fast
What I wish I’d known:
❌ Don’t buy the refillable souvenir cups
$18 (kids) / $22 (adult)
Not worth it, and my kids drank way too much soda
I wish I’d brought a cooler with drinks and snacks
I also wish I’d been better prepared to make my own coffee and simple food in the room
⚠️ A Few Honest Downsides
Hanging on the wave pool wall rubbed the kids’ fingers raw
After two full days in the water, both kids ended up with painful, itchy chlorine rashes
Between the chlorine exposure and overall exhaustion, one night would’ve been ideal
🌟 Final Thoughts
Would I do it again? Yes — but differently.
✔️ Great for winter break
✔️ Very convenient
✔️ Tons of water park access
✔️ A fun, contained experience for kids
Next time:
1 night instead of 2
Bring more of our own food and drinks
Skip the refillable cups
Be prepared for chlorine sensitivity
All in all, it was a really special reset for me and a fun memory for the kids — and now I feel much more prepared when we go again.
